Developer André Balazs is bringing a
touch of Bond, James Bond, to 40
Mercer, a new apartment building in SoHo just down the block from the Mercer Hotel. This summer, the
units in the 15-story structure that Balazs created with French architectural
wizard Jean Nouvel are being offered for sale. Nouvel, who is known for
his transparent Fondation Cartier building in Paris, has taken New Yorkers’
obsession with views to new heights, most especially in the duplex penthouse
shown here in a digital rendering. From the private elevator and
50-foot-long living room to the five generous bathrooms (including a tub for two
and four showers six feet wide), the 3,500-sqare-foot residence startles with
original and curious detail. There’s one feature, though, that propels the
property into the realm of the truly extraordinary: Press a button and the
east-facing living room wall-all 21-by-11 sold-glass feet of it – slides open,
transforming the entire space into a terrace. Now, that’s a
trick. Penthouse price upon request. Interested Centurion members
should contact James Lansill of the Sunshine Group at 212-925-5050.
